Castle Market represents the final chapter of years of Sheffield’s market history linked to the castle. As the markets move to The Moor we are celebrating and recording the history, culture, traders and shoppers of the Castle Market. Sheffield Castle was a castle in Sheffield, England, constructed at the confluence of the River Sheaf and the River Don, possibly on the site of a former Anglo-Saxon long house, and dominating the early town.
A motte and bailey castle had been constructed on the site at some time in the century following the Norman Conquest of England in This was destroyed in the Second Barons' War.
Within the pages of my book is a very small selection of the photos that A history of Sheffield Castle and markets book took. I hope that these photographs will be a useful resource for anyone interested in Sheffield’s history and archaeology and also a visual record of the Sheffield Castle archaeological excavation.
